Participating in the Inaugural MobiCom4AgeTech Workshop

Washington, D.C., November 18, 2024 — I had the privilege of participating in the first MobiCom4AgeTech Workshop at the prestigious 30th Annual ACM MobiCom Conference 2024, held in Washington, D.C. The event brought together researchers and experts to explore cutting-edge mobile and wireless solutions for AgeTech applications.

Alongside my colleague Soumita Ghosh, I presented our research paper titled, “Wireless Sensing-based Daily Activity Tracking System Deployment in Low-Income Senior Housing Environments.” This study highlights a non-invasive, WiFi-sensing-based approach to monitoring daily activities of low-income older adults, offering promising solutions for privacy-preserving and cost-effective healthcare monitoring. We were accompanied by our PhD supervisor and mentor, Dr. Eyuphan Bulut.

Key Highlights from the Presentation:

  • Focus: Utilizing ambient WiFi signals to monitor daily activities without the need for wearable devices or cameras.
  • Innovation: Deployment of a lightweight, low-cost system using ESP32 microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi devices.
  • Results: Our week-long deployment in real-world settings demonstrated up to 76.9% accuracy in activity detection for participants aged 55–77 years.

This research collaboration emphasizes an interdisciplinary effort to tackle healthcare challenges faced by aging populations.

Reflections from the Event

Presenting at such a prominent platform was an enriching experience. The discussions and feedback from fellow researchers in the field of wireless and mobile technologies were invaluable. Being part of this workshop not only allowed me to share our findings but also provided a glimpse into the future of mobile healthcare innovations.
